Week one of composting at home is in the books! On to week 2!
It's been a weird week because, while we did do some cooking, a lot of the compost came from prepared food that we had to chuck because they went bad. For example, leftovers of a squid dish are probably not best to eat after a number of weeks.
After a few days full of old food, I did not notice any immediate smell coming from the bin. However, when I emptied out the bag that was in the bin, that's when I noticed the bin was a little sweaty on the inside. And also a little smelly. I should mention that the bin was pretty full and this stuff was sitting out on the counter for no more than a week so makes logical sense this would happen.
Much to my delight, it was super easy to refresh the bin. Before lining it with a new bag, I wiped it with a Clorox wipe. I left the bin open to the air until the wipe's effects had evaporated and then I lined the bin.
And, thankfully, our friends in sanitation took away the larger bag in the bin that contained yard waste as well. As well as the bags and bags of extra trash we set out. I always think our garbage man is going to be cross about all the junk we leave out but they've been gracious with us as we continue to settle into the new house.
